It’s Patty’s birthday today!!!

April 4, 2012

Today is Patty’s 68th birthday

This is an important year in our life since it is the year of Patty’s 50th graduation anniversary and our 50th wedding anniversary.  I was thinking about Patty and what I could do for her birthday that would be special and that she might appreciate.  Haven’t a clue!  It’s not that I waited until her birthday to start thinking about it, really wouldn’t matter how much time I devoted to this.  Patty pretty much gets what she wants when she wants it and she’s real good at planning ahead.  For instance, she has our 50th wedding anniversary celebration planned out completely for at least two weeks in Hawaii for next December and January and that includes plans for Traci, Rene, Samuel, Gabriel, Tammy, Susan, Kai, herself and me and at, least in part, for my friend Joe and his new bride Diane and anybody else who shows up for the event.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

I know that I am a really lucky guy to have Patty as a life companion and the fact that we grew up together makes us really compatible because we share a lot of the same values and beliefs that are based on our life experiences.  She is beautiful, extremely intelligent and the nicest person I know and I’m sure I married up in a big way.  That’s not to say that it’s all a bed of roses!  For instance, she has always had the ability to put me in a catatonic trance by telling me about her cousins relationships to each other and to the family or describing a double-entry bookkeeping problem that she is working on.  Also, she finds the IRS Tax Code to be a fascinating subject and is currently deeply immersed in tracing her family’s involvement in the Revolutionary War back through as many branches of the family tree as possible.  She likes to tell me about that in excruciating detail.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

However, we do have similar likes and dislikes and we read the same books and enjoy a lot of the same pastimes.  Also our diet is truly unique for a couple of our advanced age since we eat like a couple of 12-year-olds that can also drink beer.  When Patty got back from Europe last year I had over 30 pints of Ben & Jerry’s and 3 cases of Longboard Lager stored up.  That’s a major part of our diet, especially when we’re on vacation, which is most of the time nowadays.

So what am I going to do for her birthday?  One year I got her a McLane Lawn Edger for her birthday, (that’s the Cadillac of lawn edger’s you know). The kids used to get her a big (about a quart) bottle of Jean Nate bath oil.  I don’t know if they even make that anymore.  Needless to say, the bar’s not set that high.  Maybe something will come to me later today.
